Abama Golf makes history with the return of the LET's Tenerife Women's Open

There are sporting events that make history, and this was exactly the case this past 5th-8th of June at Abama Golf when we hosted the highly anticipated return of the Ladies European Tour (LET) to Tenerife for the Tenerife Women's Open 2025. Impeccable preparation, first-class international players, and the exciting ambiance of a top professional tournament made for a true milestone in the history of Abama Resort.

Organized by Deporte & Business, with whom we also had the pleasure of working on the Tenerife Golf Cup 2025, and with the collaboration of Turismo de Tenerife, the event marked a before and after for professional golf in the Canary Islands. Abama Golf, with its technically challenging layout and endless views of the Atlantic, became the picture-perfect setting for some of today's female golf stars.

During the three days of intense competition, 132 athletes battled for the title in perfect conditions. The course, designed by Dave Thomas and meticulously maintained by Mario Arzola and his staff, offered exciting challenges that demanded precision, strategy, and respect for the natural environment. The day before the official tee-off, Dimple Melwani, the official representative from Turismo de Tenerife, took the first ceremonial drive off Abama Golf's Hole 1.

The star of the tournament was 25-year-old Czech player Sara Kousková, who ended 9 below par with a score of 71 to clinch her second consecutive victory on the Ladies European Tour after winning two weeks previously at the Jabra Ladies Open. With this win, not only did Kousková take home the trophy, but also became the first champion of the Tenerife Women's Open in the tournament's new era.

Alongside her were several of Spain's top golfers, including Ana Peláez Triviño, who finished in the top 10, as well as other up-and-comers who found at Abama the ideal setting for showing off their best game.

The awards ceremony, celebrated at Abama Golf's iconic Hole 18 at the end of the final day, was the perfect cap to an historic week. We were honored with the presence of numerous top representatives from government and the world of sport, reflecting Tenerife's firm commitment to elite golf and female sport. Among the attendees were Lope Afonso, the Vice President and Head of Tourism of the Cabildo de Tenerife; Dimple Melwani, Representative of Turismo de Tenerife; Susana Fernández de Caleya, the Vice President of the Canary Islands Golf Federation; Brendan Breen, the Business Development Director of Tropical Hoteles and Abama Golf; João Pinto, the Tournament Director for the Ladies European Tour; and Iñigo Aramburu, the Director of Deporte & Business. During the ceremony, a symbol of the institutional and private sector support for the return of the LET to the island, Lope Afonso had the honor of presenting winner Sara Kousková with her trophy, while Dimple Melwani conferred the second prize to runner-up Helen Briem.

Beyond sport

The celebration of the Tenerife Women's Open 2025 at Abama Resort was the first return of the LET to Tenerife in more than a decade. The last time the island hosted one of the circuit's events was in 2005, and being able to host it this year under Brendan Breen at Abama Golf was an incredible honor.

Like many events at Abama Resort, the competition was only part of the experience the participants enjoyed. The players and their guests were welcomed with a reception at Tágara restaurant in Plaza Abama, as well as given the chance to experience some of the leisure activities that make Abama and the southwest of Tenerife unique. From the opening ceremony to the final day, every detail was designed to celebrate the talent, diversity, and competitive spirit of women's golf. The success of the Tenerife Women's Open 2025 has underscored Abama Golf's position as one of the top courses on the international circuit, but also marks the deliberate drive to support the development of women's golf in the Canary Islands, an objective that Abama Resort is committed to supporting.

Once again, it was a true pleasure to work with Turismo de Tenerife and Deporte & Business, our staunch allies in the organization of this event. We are deeply grateful for their trust in Abama Resort to host such an important tournament, and we look forward to our future collaboration.
