Family hotels in Tenerife: the Abama Kids Camp

Holidays are just around the corner and family hotels in Tenerife will be busy this summer as domestic and international tourists look to enjoy the incredible variety of attractions offered on the island.

At Abama, we know these attractions go far beyond the amusement parks created for children. Tenerife’s true wonders are its unique natural environment and the diverse culture that has developed from centuries of varied influences.

When we first conceived the Abama Kids Camp, it was with these attractions in mind, and the belief that when presented in an engaging way, through activities and movement, children are as hungry for knowledge as adults. The philosophy of the Abama Kids Camp is to address all their needs: physical activity, skill refinement, discovery, mental stimulation, and understanding of the world around them.

The result is a full roster of activities in a variety of categories, adapted to age and interest and always in rotation so even guests who stay for two weeks at Abama Resort will never tire of wondering what awaits them at the Abama Kids Camp today. When campers arrive, they get an Explorer’s Card in which they can note what they’ve already done and even bring it back on their next visit to Abama. There’s a surprise for everyone who completes all the categories.

The Abama Kids Camp has a large indoor-outdoor campus set in a beautiful grassy area of the resort, making it easy for children to feel connected to nature and rediscover that there are offline pleasures, too.

Open every day from 9-17h, meals and snacks are included, so you won’t need to worry about preparing anything for them before they leave the house on their adventures.

The Abama Kids Camp: Summer 2025

So what awaits the children this summer?

The Abama Kids Camp serves children from 4-14 years old, and the programs are separated by age:

  • Children 4 to 8 years old: lots of fun activities appropriate to their age group, where they learn how to be good little explorers and companions to their new friends.
  • Children 9 to 14 years old: older children have activities available that suit their likes and skills, including sports, advanced handicrafts, tournaments, and extra excursions. We’re also building up our Teen Room, with table football, games, and air hockey.

Two nights per week, the Abama Kids Camp also offers extended hours with dinner included and evening/nighttime activities. Have some one-on-one moments with your partner at our Sunset Sessions, followed by dinner at Melvin by Martín Berasategui, and know that your children are enjoying their evening as much as you are.

Our menu of activities continues to grow, and we’re always up for new suggestions to make our family hotel in Tenerife even better!

Excursions

Enjoying nature and culture doesn’t mean the Abama Kids Camp avoids the Tenerife children’s destinations everyone has heard of. At least once per week, we take the children on excursions to some of the most well-known places on the island: Aqualand, Loro Park, and Siam Park. We also help them discover the museums and cultural destinations they’ll love, like going whale watching, and visiting various science museums, the Magic Museum, and Forestal Park. And we combine these with some of the places that are just pure fun and adrenaline, like the karting track and escape rooms.

Culture

Getting children interested in culture is all about the methods and the information we share. From the height of the Teide to the clarity of the night skies, Tenerife is at the top of many international lists. What better way to get excited about astronomy than by seeing for yourself the vast universe that city lights obscure at home? What better way to learn about the past than engaging in a bit of amateur archaeology yourself? This year we’ve also incorporated quiz contests that have kicked excitement levels up several notches.

Nature

The natural world of Tenerife is, without a doubt, the island’s greatest gift to us. Blessed with an extraordinary climate, year-round, and formed by volcanic eruptions millennia ago, the Canary Islands have flora and fauna that do not exist anywhere else on Earth. The mild weather and rich soil make it easy to grow a wide variety of comestible plants, and there is a special area in the Abama Kids Camp for gardening, as well as cooking. We introduce children to nutrition and give them the confidence of knowing they can grow their own food. We are also fortunate at Abama Resort to have a wide variety of vegetation that attracts many of the local avian and reptile species. Animal observation has been an easy and enlightening activity to incorporate into our programming.

Sport & Outdoor Activity

Naturally, a big part of summer is being outdoors, and we are lucky at the Abama Kids Camp to have plenty of space for playing football, badminton, and volleyball. We also have our own zip line. Water games are a major part of the summer fun we offer to the children, so don’t forget to pack their swimsuits! Once a week during the summer, we also have a special day with an inflatable water castle that features ramps and slides.

Creativity

For children inclined to use their fine motor skills, the Abama Kids Camp has a roster of special activities and multi-sensory projects for the oldest and youngest children. This year we have introduced soap-making, which allows the children to personalize their creations and learn about the enticing world of aromas, plants, and do-it-yourself. We have also introduced magic keychain and flower vase making activities. And Playdough modeling, hand painting and drawing continue to be classic favorites.

Science

When taught in school, science can seem intimidating or boring, but the objective of the Abama Kids Camp in this arena is to bring science back to its basic element: curiosity. How do things work? What happens beyond what we can see? How do we turn raw materials into something practical we can use? Science at the Kids Camp is all about empiricism and experimentation. We do the ever-popular volcanic eruptions with baking soda and vinegar; try out electricity circuits and discover how we can make things move; make candles ourselves from natural materials; and much, much more.

Teamwork

Children don’t need lectures about how to build community; they need to find out for themselves that everyone offers unique contributions, and that results are better when we work together. The Abama Kids Camp has loads of activities and games designed to bring children together, no matter how shy or outgoing, and to give everyone their due space to work as a unit. UNO, bingo, sandcastle contests, and team-building games are all part of our activity roster.

Performing Arts

For children who prefer to get their exercise through the performing arts, the Abama Kids Camp offers a stage and dedicated space for dancing, theater, musical games, and acrobatics. Our monitors are experts in encouraging participation and ensuring every camper has a place at the table and a chance to develop their skills. Plays and performance are part of everyday life…watch your little ones bloom as they’re given a platform to explore the performing arts.

Directed and manned by a dedicated team of educators and monitors, the Abama Kids Camp is a space unlike any other you’ll find among family hotels in Tenerife. We recognize children’s unique set of interests and desires, and know we can make this island as appealing to them as it is to us, in all its incredible diversity. Don’t feel any parental guilt about sending your children to camp this summer when you’re at Abama Resort. We guarantee they’ll be begging to come back for more.
