By popular vote, both players and industry professionals have recognised Mario Arzola, our Greenkeeper, as the best in the archipelago. Organised by Golfencanarias, this prestigious annual competition invites professionals and enthusiasts to vote for those who have demonstrated outstanding expertise in their field. We are exceptionally proud that Arzola secured 37.7% of the votes, surpassing distinguished professionals such as Adrián González Padrón of Golf Las Américas and Fernando Borrajo of Buenavista Golf.
"For me, this award means a lot, particularly because the votes primarily came from players, many of whom are well-acquainted with all the golf courses in the Canary Islands," Arzola remarked upon receiving the accolade. He also took the opportunity to express his deep gratitude to his family: "On a personal level, my first thoughts were of my family, who sacrifice so much as I dedicate countless hours to this profession. This is a job that demands true dedication and that would not be possible without the support and understanding of my loved ones. Without them, I simply could not do this. Thank you, family!"
Arzola has been an integral part of Abama Golf since the inception of the Dave Thomas-designed course in 2002. His knows the course inside and out and works tirelessly on its upkeep.
"With the magnificent team we have at Abama Golf, the truth is that everything is much easier. However, I would highlight that our main challenge is keeping our 18 holes at the highest possible standard at all times," he shared in an interview with Golfencanarias.com.
The year 2024 was particularly testing for Arzola, as it marked the complete renovation of the course’s greens. The introduction of the Bermuda TifEagle grass variety offers more resistance to disease and pests while reducing the need for chemical treatments. Furthermore, this variety is ideally suited to Abama’s unique topography and climate and allows for a faster game. With 23 lakes, 96 white sand bunkers, over 25,000 palm trees, and 300 species of subtropical flora, Abama Golf is a true paradise with breathtaking ocean views. Sustainability remains at the forefront of its operations, with the course irrigated exclusively using desalinated water produced in our own plant under stringent volume and frequency controls.
While Arzola is responsible for the overall maintenance of this exceptional course, he is the first to acknowledge the collective effort behind its success. "The team I’m part of is the best we could have, and they are the reason Abama Golf continues to be recognised as one of Spain’s finest golf courses," he stated.
Mechanics, irrigation specialists, and gardeners, among others, all contribute to the upkeep of the course, and Arzola insists on sharing the honour of his achievement. "This award is not only mine. My share of this recognition is exactly the same as any other member of the golf course maintenance staff.”
