Abama Golf Tenerife: At the Forefront of Sustainability

Abama Golf Tenerife is leading the way in sustainability, pioneering circular fertilization systems and advanced irrigation techniques. The course is set to replace its greens with highly sustainable grass, positioning itself as one of Spain's top golf courses in environmental compliance, ahead of European regulations.

To facilitate this transformation, Abama Golf is closed for five months to refurbish the Club House. By October 2024, players can look forward to world-class greens and newly modernized, welcoming facilities.

Green Replacement

The golf course is upgrading to Bermuda TifEagle grass, a variety suited to the island’s climate and resistant to diseases and pests. This change will reduce the need for chemical treatments, ease maintenance, and respond well to fertilizers even under conditions of water scarcity. According to Brendan Breen, Director of Business Development for Tropical Hotels Group, the decision followed a comprehensive analysis of the course's climate, soil, topography, vegetation, and resources. In addition to the significant savings in water, the new turf will also provide a premium putting surface capable of reaching championship speeds of up to 11.5 and commercial speeds of up to 9.

Leaders in Circular Fertilization

Another fundamental step in the Abama golf course's sustainability strategy is circular fertilization, in which we are already a benchmark in the Canary Islands. Utilizing a 100% organic system, without the need for chemical intervention, the course recycles plant waste into nutrients. Grass, palm, and plant leaves, along with algae and other natural elements, are oxygenated to nurture beneficial bacteria and then enriched with plant extracts fermented on-site. This method fertilizes the soil effectively while protecting the environment. “We’ve long used natural fertilizers for pest and disease control, and switching to a more eco-friendly grass species that allows for greater water savings will further enhance our commitment to environmental care,” adds Brendan Breen.

Efficient Irrigation

To maintain its greens, Abama Golf makes a daily calculation of irrigation water based on evapotranspiration data obtained from its weather station. This approach ensures efficient water use and customized watering for each zone without wasting a single drop. In addition, it is important to note that Abama Resort Tenerife operates its own water desalination plant, supporting a fully circular water process.

A Bird Sanctuary

With 23 lakes, 96 white sand bunkers, more than 25,000 palm trees and 300 species of subtropical plants, Abama Golf Tenerife offers one of the best views of the Atlantic Ocean and the island of La Gomera. It also serves as a haven for numerous species of birds, some of which are endangered. In fact, many golfers visit us not only to practice their swing, but also to enjoy their passion for ornithology.

As Brendan Breen of Tropical Hotels Group notes, "Golf courses can significantly contribute to ecosystem sustainability and often evolve into valuable natural sanctuaries. However, this requires dedicated effort and investment in maintenance processes and biodiversity preservation." Since its construction in 2005, Abama Golf Tenerife has been committed to leading in environmental certifications, establishing itself as one of Europe’s best golf courses.
