This summer, enjoy the night sky from your home at Abama

Few experiences compare to gazing at the night sky from your home at Abama. But this summer, the stars have even more to offer. In 2026, the heavens seem to have aligned, quite literally, to make the experience even more extraordinary. The Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics has confirmed that the archipelago will experience one of its most remarkable astronomical events in recent memory, with a solar eclipse and one of the year's most anticipated meteor showers taking place almost simultaneously in August.

On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse will occur. Although it will not be fully visible from the Canary Islands, it will still be observable across the archipelago with a magnitude of approximately 66–74%, sufficient to noticeably darken the sky for several minutes and turn midday into a striking natural phenomenon. Later that evening, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak, coinciding with a new moon and therefore particularly dark skies, creating favourable viewing conditions. Combined, these events make the night of 12–13 August an exceptional opportunity for astronomical observation, particularly given Tenerife’s clear skies, which are among the most reliable in Europe.

Ten years of dreaming beneath the stars: the spirit of Abama

Abama’s connection with the night sky is well established. The most recent edition of the Owners Cup, held under the theme Star Bright, marked the tenth anniversary of this annual homeowners’ event and included a focus on the night skies of the Canary Islands in collaboration with the Starlight Foundation. The programme featured the Star Bright astrophotography exhibition at the Abama Gallery in Plaza Abama, presenting works by photographer Daniel López from his project El Cielo de Canarias, which has been featured by National Geographic and NASA. The exhibition served as a wonderful reminder to the entire Abama community of just how fortunate we are to have these breathtaking night skies at our fingertips.

This relationship with the stars extends far beyond a single celebration. In a recent interview, Antonia Varela, Director of the Starlight Foundation at the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics, explained that Abama Resort possesses all the qualities required to become a certified Starlight Resort, thanks to a philosophy that already embraces sustainability, authenticity and harmony with its natural surroundings. Achieving this certification would further protect the night sky above the resort, directly benefiting homeowners who enjoy these pristine stargazing conditions as part of everyday life.

If you have been planning a return to your home at Abama, this summer presents the perfect opportunity. On the night of 12 August, the skies above the Canary Islands will host one of the most complete astronomical displays in years. Plan your stay to make sure you are out on your terrace or in your garden after sunset, and experience a night sky that has always been an integral part of the Abama landscape.
