Our owners came together once again in October for the most anticipated event of the year, our annual Abama Owners Cup. Now in its ninth edition, this gathering of residents features a variety of exclusive activities united by a theme that celebrates the extraordinary island we call home. This year we took a “Journey Through the Earth,” exploring the fascinating volcanic and cultural history of Tenerife, with special experiences that explored the island’s aboriginal traditions, culinary history, and unique orography.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to all the owners who were able to share this time with us and who have helped us shape the interests and spirit of the Abama community.
Thanks as well to the sponsors who contributed so generously and made the celebration of this event possible: Ayuntamiento de Guía de Isora, the Tourism Department of Guía de Isora, El Gusto por el Vino, El Corte Inglés, Eva Divine Boutiques, Black Lava, Banca March, Stellanella, Oris, Abama Gourmet by HiperDino, AMV Construcciones, Mahou, Fonteide, Greenmowers, Taittinger, Perelada, El Rancho Restaurante, Valiente, Sandára Wellness & Spa, Anne Semonin Paris, and Merkarte.
Owners Cup Golf Tournament
We were delighted to welcome a record 87 participants to our Owners Cup Single Stableford golf tournament this year, a sign of the event’s continuing popularity among our owners. The balmy day began with the first tee time at 8:30, and continued until mid-afternoon to accommodate all our players. Our Hole 10 refreshment space, designed with furniture by Valiente, featured snacks and cava from Bodegas Perelada & Chivite and Corte Inglés.
Anne Semonin Workshop
Anne Semonin Paris, the star brand of our Sandára Wellness & Spa, is known for its unique combination of essential oils, trace elements, plant extracts, marine ingredients and biotechnology that answer all skincare needs. Several of our non-golfers learned all about their products in this morning skincare workshop. Afterwards, participants received a goodie bag of Anne Semonin samples: a promise of future delights at Sandára.
Art Workshop
Ten participants joined our art workshop led by Elia Estévez, a Tenerife native and one of the three young artists chosen by the Merkarte program whose work is currently on display in the Abama Gallery. Estévez, who is an art teacher as well as an artist, took “Working with pigment” as the theme of the activity, and had participants experience what it was like to be an artist centuries ago, before the existence of prepared paints. She drew their attention to the exciting textures and depth of paints produced from pigment by hand, and gave them the reference of a book of Icelandic landscapes to illustrate the great variety of textures and colors present in volcanic geography, before they experimented themselves with the hand-mixed paints to create their own work.
A Journey Through the Earth Experience
Tenerife’s land and its natural heritage were the focus of this year’s Friday afternoon experience, an exploration of recent geological history led by guides Mary Cabral and Carsten Ulf Krüger and prepared in concert with Sergio Socorro, biologist and Canarian geology expert, who is a retired specialist of the Museum of Natural Sciences of Tenerife.
Residents were picked up at Abama and transported to the Teide National Park, where they stopped at the Narices del Teide viewpoint for a breathtaking view of the stratovolcanoes, and then observed a variety of other geological phenomena and sites on the way back down the mountain.
Before dinner at El Rancho restaurant in Chío, there was a performance of the Salto del Pastor (The Shepherd’s Leap), a tradition of the indigenous communities of the archipelago recorded in historical writings as early as the mid-1400s. The exploration of Tenerife heritage continued during dinner with some of the best traditional recipes and products from Guía de Isora, including escaldón, rancho canario, and gofío. As always, the creative wine pairings were provided by El Gusto por el Vino, and music by El Hierro singer Claudia Álamo with Danny G. Martínez on guitar.
Padel Clinic with Carla Mesa
Over the past few Owners Cups, we’ve hosted expo matches between professionals, but this year our owners had the chance to participate themselves.
Carla Mesa, Tenerife’s No. 1-ranked padel player, who also ranks in the Top 40 in the international padel rankings, gave an exclusive clinic to 12 of our residents on Saturday morning. Working a variety of skills at every level, the participants benefited from expert advice on the physical and mental aspects of the game.
Savana Boutique Fashion Show
At midday on Saturday, the Tágara pool terrace became the runway for the Savana Boutique fashion show. This boutique, which will soon have a physical location in Plaza Abama, is one of the establishments of Tenerife designer and entrepreneur Eva Divine, and features her timeless, elegant brands. The runway show was a combination of leisurewear, swimwear, and red carpet looks, accompanied by Tágara-provided cocktail service and music.
Awards Dinner
The Abama Event Garden and its spectacular ocean views greeted guests on the final evening of the Owners Cup as we gathered for the Awards Dinner. Catered by Tenerife restaurateur Carlos Gamonal, our owners were treated to a three-course meal that included local fish, aged tenderloin, classic desserts from the archipelago, and regional wines.
We were privileged to host the Beselch Rodriguez Trio for our musical accompaniment, and it was many of our owners’ first introduction to the timple, the Canary Islands’ most popular traditional instrument. Rodriguez is an important member of the new generation of timple players carving out an original global sound based on island traditions.
Thanks go to our many sponsors who provided wonderful prizes for the winners of our golf tournament, and to all the guests who made this evening of dining and dancing such a wonderful community experience.
