The Abama Gallery by Merkarte is an exciting space within Plaza Abama, our resort community hub, where we are thrilled to be able to support young talent from Tenerife. This exhibition area, a collaboration between Abama Hotels and the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, has been operational since late 2023 and features a rotating set of artists chosen by Merkarte to represent youth artists from the island who are beginning promising careers.
On the 25th of July, we held an opening to welcome the new round of exhibitors, and it was a wonderful chance for our owners, guests, and government officials to chat with the artists, admire their work, and buy art for their homes.
We look forward to more of our visitors and residents seeing the work and meeting the artists at collaborative activities planned throughout the 4-month duration of the current exhibition.
The Merkarte program is an initiative designed to promote the work of young Canary Island artists through exhibitions, educational activities and socio-cultural programming. Close ties with private companies and public institutions have been fundamental to the success of Merkarte, and Abama Resort Tenerife is honored to participate in its twenty-first year.
The chosen artists
Gara Acosta
Gara Acosta was born in Tenerife in 1990 and her paintings reveal a persistent exploration of the female form and experience. Her subjects are animated and dynamic, perpetually revealing shifting layers of character and perspective.
Alba Dorta
Alba Dorta’s paintings focus largely on the deconstruction of the human nude, with a contemporary perspective that is both activist and feminist. Executed primarily in oil and acrylic, Dorta’s use of color and expression of weight give her work a fascinating tactile quality.
Elia Estévez
Elia Estévez is a painter, photographer, and graphic artist who uses a broad range of techniques to blend natural and human subjects with a level of abstraction that renders them both symbolic and suggestive. Texture and movement are key elements that she draws out in each of her works.
