Creativity and artistry have many ways of presenting themselves in the world: in delicate shapes on a canvas, in the interpretation of notes on a page… And also in the artistic expression of the men and women who are out to change it all. Flamenco dancer Sara Baras and Michelin-starred chef Martín Berasategui will demonstrate at the upcoming Abama Gala in October how art can bring together sight, sound and smell in one unforgettable evening. Today we want to tell you a little more about these two extraordinary icons so you don’t miss out on this amazing artistic and culinary event destined to ignite your senses.
Sara Baras’s performance in Tenerife will take place at our luxury resort, in The Ritz-Carlton, Abama. After Baras’s Suite Flamenca performance, the team of our eight-Michelin-star chef Martín Berasategui will delight us with exquisite cocktails and a dinner designed exclusively for this occasion to support the Alda Foundation, which works to improve youth education in Paraguay.
Scheduled for the 14th of October from 18h, this Sara Baras performance at Abama is a true luxury, as she is an internationally renowned flamenco dancer and choreographer who has received prizes including the National Dance Award in 2003, the Vermeil Medal from the City of Paris, the title of honorary ambassador of Spain, a Gold Medal from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Galileo Prize from Florence in 2000, and the title of Iberoamerican Cultural Ambassador, among others.
Born in San Fernando, Cádiz, in 1971, Sara Baras’s shows, created and directed by her and her company, bring together flamenco, dance and music in a sublime experience that unites lyricism and seduction, sweetness and passion, and has opened the doors to the most important theatres and stages on the planet, including the Teatro Bellas Artes of Mexico City, the City Center Theater in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the Performing Arts Center of Miami, the Theatre Orb in Tokyo, the Concert Hall of Hong Kong, the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, the Auditorio de la Conciliazione in Rome, the Zorlu Center of Istanbul, the Opera of Dubai and the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore.
And what to say about Martín Berasategui? He is the head of Abama’s two-Michelin-star restaurant M.B and the brand-new Txoko, and he’ll be designing a meal for Sara Baras’s performance that is sure to delight the palates of our guests. This Basque chef, holder of no fewer than 8 Michelin stars, takes traditional Spanish cuisine as the starting point for his fusions with other cultures and achieves excellence every time, bringing the modern flair to his dishes required by the highest levels of international gastronomy in the 21st century. He began his training in the Escuela de Pastelería Moderna Yssingeaux, where he rubbed elbows with great international chefs. At only 26 years old, at the helm of the Bodegón Alejandro, he received his first star. Ten years later, another two were earned at his eponymous restaurant, Martín Berasategui, in the Basque town of Lasarte-Oria. And this was just the beginning of a white-hot career that has made him, indisputably, one of the best chefs in the world.
