As part of our continuing efforts to make sustainable choices at Abama, this month we have installed our first water ionizer in the Gourmet Shop of Las Terrazas de Abama. Our staff will be able to use the machine to refill their personal drinking bottles, thus eliminating Abama’s consumption of some 5,000 plastic water bottles and 1,000 multi-liter jugs per year.
Abama’s investment in one of Kangen’s best water systems will enable us to use tap water to meet the needs of the dozens of people that work in the hotels and offices of Abama, as well as soon extend this option to our guests. Upcoming installations of the water system will serve those staying in our Las Terrazas de Abama and Los Jardines de Abama Suites as well as our breakfast and pool bar clients.
The installation of the water ionizer system is the latest in a series of choices at the hotel connected to our Sustainability Plan. Currently, Las Terrazas de Abama Suites has been granted Biosphere Certified status by the Responsible Tourism Institute, and it is our intention to continue applying for environmental certifications that demand ever higher standards of sustainability. It is our responsibility to this island to do our best for nature and the people who live here.
Our ongoing Sustainable Suites Project is another of our initiatives. One by one, we are making every aspect of our guests’ quarters more sustainable, from installing flowmeters, low-consumption lightbulbs and motion sensors to establishing linen and towel reuse policies. The amenities our guests enjoy are locally produced, thus reducing associated transport and energy consumption. We have gone completely paperless, both within our suites and for the checkout process, and our coffee capsules are compostable. And we have recently begun using an electronic lock system, eliminating the need for plastic keys and allowing guests to open their rooms from their mobiles.
Sustainability begins with the actions of each and every one of us, and our new water ionizer system is just the latest in a series of actions and investments Abama is making in the sustainable suites and sustainable homes that will ensure we remain in harmony with our environment.
