Imagine enjoying the serene sophistication of our luxury properties in Tenerife, located in one of the most heavenly retreats in Europe, yet still have privileged access to an opera program on par with that of any bustling capital. That’s exactly what you’ll find this year in Santa Cruz de Tenerife as one of the most interesting opera seasons in Spain unfolds.
The programme, driven by the Cabildo Insular through the Tenerife Auditorium with the sponsorship of the Instituto Canario de Desarrollo Cultural and the Instituto Nacional de Artes Escénicas y Música (INAEM) of the government of Spain, is a fascinating proposal combining consolidated works with innovative shows that will delight any true music lover. It also features in-house productions forged in Tenerife with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife and the Coro Titular Ópera de Tenerife Intermezzo performing in all their splendor.
From September to June, the 2025/26 season will be the longest in the history of the programme and will consist of 15 titles. Among the standouts will be Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) by Richard Wagner, performed by the Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile; Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck in a production at the Auditorio de Tenerife; and Roméo et Juliette by Gounod, also at the Auditorio de Tenerife, with Brazilian André Heller-Lopes as stage director.
These classic operas share space with daring avant-garde proposals such as The Diary of Anne Frank by Grigori Frid, directed by Bruno Berger-Gorski with the Europäisches Musiktheater Wien and the Kultusgemeinde Köln; María de Buenos Aires by Piazzola from Galemúsica and the Centro Dramático Galego; and Domitila by João Guilherme Ripper, a production of the Fundación Juan March and Teatro de la Zarzuela. Among this year's highlights is also the Spanish premiere of Yerma, by Heitor Villa-Lobos, an opera based on the play by Federico García Lorca. It is a production of the Auditorio de Tenerife, the Teatro de la Zarzuela and the Festival Amazonas de Ópera (Manaus, Brazil).
Along with affordable season tickets that no opera aficionado should pass up, the season will support the Ópera en Familia and Ópera en minúscula initiatives, which change up the venues and are geared towards incorporating other audiences.
Although opera enthusiasts know that the Canary Islands have an enviable history, this latest cultural boost is a sign of the qualitative growth of Tenerife not only as a tourism destination, but also as a sophisticated permanent home. For those who have decided to buy luxury properties in Tenerife and, more specifically, at Abama Resort, the proximity to a cultural program of this level is one of the bonuses that will deeply enrich daily life. Living at Abama means more than incomparable views, first-class services, and absolute privacy; it offers direct access to art at the highest levels.
Abama and the lyric tradition
It’s no secret that Abama Resort’s community of owners has a special interest in classical music. We saw it at our opera gala in the 2018 Owners Cup, when the resort hosted several emerging voices of European opera: soprano Carmen Mateo, tenor Koldjan Kaçani and baritone Pablo Ruíz. That event, which was both intimate and thrilling, came about thanks to culture forming part of Abama's DNA. Having that indelible memory makes the spirit of this new programme all the more attractive.
Acquiring one of Abama Resort's luxury properties in Tenerife goes beyond having a holiday asset, and cultural initiatives like this one are part of the long-term satisfaction of those who choose to enjoy the Abama lifestyle year-round. Tenerife is an island that, between its extraordinary landscapes and the refreshing embrace of the ocean, makes room for the universal language of emotions and the sublime intensity of professional performance. If you were thinking of spending a little more time at your Abama residence over the coming months, your decision’s just been made.
